Renal Ultrasound Q&A

What is a renal ultrasound?

A renal ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic test that produces detailed images of the size, shape, and location of your kidneys. In some cases, renal ultrasound is also used to monitor your kidneys’ blood flow.

During a renal ultrasound, your Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc. technologist places a handheld device, called a transducer, on your skin. The transducer produces soundwaves that bounce off your organs and internal soft tissues. The reflected waves upload to a computer that translates them into digital images. These images are then sent to our on-staff radiologist who interprets them and sends these results in the form of a report to your physician if it was a diagnostic study. If the study was a screening scan, then the report will go directly to you via mail or pick up.

Why would I need a kidney ultrasound?

A kidney ultrasound provides useful insights in terms of diagnosing and treating kidney-related health problems. At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., we regularly use kidney ultrasounds to detect:

  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Abscesses
  • Obstructions
  • Fluid collection
  • Infections

Is getting a renal ultrasound safe?

Renal ultrasounds are safe and well-tolerated. There’s no radiation used and the transducer is easy on your skin. That said, certain medical conditions may interfere with the accuracy of your results. Talk with your technologist if you’re overweight or you’ve recently undergone a barium procedure.

How do I prepare for a renal ultrasound?

Please be well hydrated the day before your appointment. Also, an hour before leaving home, it’s important to drink at least 24 ounces of clear fluid (preferably water). Once you do, avoid going to the bathroom.

After you arrive at Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., your technologist walks you through the procedure and lets you ask any questions you may have.

What happens during a renal ultrasound?

Your technologist asks you to lie down on an exam table. Next, they gently rub ultrasound gel across the skin near your kidney area. This makes it easier for the transducer to move around.

The transducer sends out ultrasound waves that bounce off the structures inside your body. The waves bounce back and the transducer translates them into 2D images on a computer monitor. The entire rental ultrasound process usually takes 20-30 minutes.

There’s no recovery time needed or side effects, so you can return to your normal routine immediately following your appointment.
