Testicular Ultrasound Q&A

What is a testicular ultrasound?

A testicular ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses soundwaves to take detailed images of your testicles and the tissues in your scrotum.

A man’s testicles play an important role in reproduction. They produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone. If you experience pain or swelling in your pelvic area or near your testicles and scrotum, it may point to a more serious underlying health problem.

A testicular ultrasound can pinpoint these issues and provide insight to the doctor in developing a custom treatment plan.

Why would I need a testicular ultrasound?

At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound Inc., we use testicular ultrasound to observe and help your physician diagnose abnormalities that affect one or both testicles. We frequently use testicular ultrasound to:

  • Confirm the presence of a tumor
  • Determine the severity of trauma to your scrotum
  • Identify sources of pain or swelling
  • Assess the cause of infertility
  • Evaluate the possibility of a twisted or pinched testicle
  • Detect and evaluate varicoceles

At Orange Diagnostic Ultrasound, Inc., we also use testicular ultrasounds to examine blood flow to and around your testicles. Poor circulation to your testicles can lead to low-quality semen and erectile issues.

What is the process for receiving a testicular ultrasound?

On the day of your appointment, you lie down on your back with your legs spread or bent. Next, your technologist places a towel underneath your scrotum to elevate your testicles.

Once you’re in position, your technologist applies a warm, water-based gel to your testicles and runs the handheld transducer across different areas of your scrotum. The transducer emits soundwaves that provide real-time images of your testicles and scrotum.

Following your appointment, you get dressed and go about your regular routine. The entire process usually takes 30 minutes.

When will I receive the results of my testicular ultrasound?

Following your testicular ultrasound, we give your results to the radiologist. The radiologist reviews the images taken during your appointment and sends a comprehensive report to your primary care physician if it was a diagnostic study. If the study was a screening scan, then the report will go directly to you via mail or pick up.
